Uganda's long-serving leader, President Yoweri Museveni, has once again received the backing of the country's ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), to contest in the upcoming 2026 presidential election.
The endorsement, announced during the party's gathering, reaffirms the NRM's commitment to Museveni's leadership, extending his decades-long hold on power. Museveni, who first took office in 1986, is already one of Africa's longest-serving heads of state.
Supporters argue that his leadership has provided stability and continuity, while critics say his extended stay in power raises concerns about political inclusivity and democratic transition.
The 2026 elections will be closely watched both within Uganda and across the continent, as they hold implications for governance, generational leadership, and political reform in East Africa.
