African News: DR Congo, M23 Rebels Open Peace Talks in Doha

Wednesday, August 27, 2025

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 rebel group have commenced peace negotiations in Doha, Qatar, as part of renewed efforts to end years of conflict in the eastern part of the country.

The discussions, facilitated by Qatar, aim to address security concerns, humanitarian challenges, and the reintegration of displaced communities. Both the Congolese government and representatives of the M23 rebel movement have expressed cautious optimism, though the road to lasting peace remains complex.

Eastern DRC has been plagued by violence for decades, with armed groups battling over territory, natural resources, and political influence. The conflict has displaced millions and worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Observers hope the Doha talks will mark a turning point, especially as international pressure mounts for a durable solution to one of Africa's longest-running conflicts.
